Introductions Amanda McGregor B+B invited Amanda to propose a project for Letchworth Garden City. Alternative Planning has been adapted from AmandaТs work on Rebuilding Paradise. This is an international project that has developed into a form of town and city transformation through the visual arts, communication, engaging events and creative visualisation. Alternative Planning has integrated Rebuilding Paradise with Guided Self Healing for an alternative approach to town planning that leans towards the use of creative visualisation. Amanda uses creative visualisation to manifest physical happenings for the highest good of people and communities. Tony Dickinson Tony was a District Officer in Hong Kong, responsible for the interface between the planning process and the community. He is a Guided Self Healing Practitioner. Ian Warder Lives and works in Letchworth. He is a maths teacher at St ChristopherТs school. He also works with the techniques of Guided Self Healing. Ian has experienced the management of childrens expression and freedom through his previous work with Summerhill School. He has recently moved to Letchworth. Colin Haigh Works for Hertsfordshire County Council. He grew up in Letchworth, he works for the council as he would like to take part in the development of Letchworth. He is also doing an M.A. in town planning. He has been recommended as good at activating change. Becky Shaw Artist, Becky enjoys working with people in the social context. She produces creative work with groups of people. Worked with Marie Curie in an engaging way to give free creative expression. Interested in how art and cities engage and how that can serve the community. Sophe Hope & Sarah Carrington B+B, curated СBrand New LetchworthТ which has been running since May. B+B is a socially engaging art practise that provides a point of communication, expression, creative development and debate. Sophie and Sarah have developed a large network of action based individuals surrounding the project СBrand New LetchworthТ. Sophie and Sarah are socially engaging, responsible people. They are looking for ways of continuing the development of the project. William Armitage Is Interested in the function of communities and how to create more events that are engaging to all parts of the community. Concerned with economic estates and how to spread profits and growth of the communities. He is interested in ways of communicating and focusing on the needs of the community. I.e. How it is to look after children going through to retirement, aware of the different stages of life, the relationship of rent and need. The commercial situation and how it is blocking the integration of the people. He is looking for new ways of being communal. Lorna Kercher Came to Letchworth to live whilst looking for somewhere peaceful. She bought her children up there. Lorna became councilor and worked her way up through involvement and understanding the community. Lorna was recently elected as councilor. She likes the community feel of the council estate and doesnТt want to live anywhere else because of the sense of community. However she feels their community is not considered a part of the whole community of Letchworth. Samson Adjei Collaborates with Greg Epps Ц СOffice MonkeysТ. They design the use of space in creative ways. Samson is from an architectural background. Notes on the Visualisation William When looking for a Town Centre, he felt there was no center. Felt Letchworth was not finished in the middle A Garden Ц saw deer, Muntjack deer whilst picking from tomato plants- protection Felt priviledged to experience this. Satisfied feeling. Sophie Useful for relaxation and breathing, Strength and focusing on stomach, Felt relaxing. She was walking around Norton common. Enjoyed the pathways, entering the park, small pathways better than grandness. Sophie likes small alley pathways. Really likes mazes, those elements she would like to promote. The centre, monument like Nelson common. Thought the lead up to train station seemed like a large center, the role of the station is different to a lot of towns. At end of Broadway is the first ever roundabout, this could be more of a centre. Straight line through the common. The station breaks the path through. Lorna The house was her house, going out her front door. Outside front door was the worst eye saw in Letchworth. This visualisation gave her terrible neck ache. Town centre, she couldnТt concentrate. Think of garden Ц Syon (?)/Sile park, something really wonderful. Becky Science fiction, energy zoom Ц really spectacular visualisation. Inside house she didnТt like so she went to a house she did like. She did like a modern block very communal very glassy, children, washing, at back the communal garden. Very different people sitting reading under trees. Market that she could buy things cheap and get things what she wants. Exchange, community and town development is often based in the market. DonТt like gentile quiet, like a lot of people. All really engaged with decisions, very active populis. It came up through the discussion that the law meant that as there is a market at Hitchin there could not be this type of market in Letchworth. It would be possible to make a place for a more creative market with cheaper rent on stalls. Like a Morrocan feel, events, weather a problem, undercover arcades make it possible. Is it possible to have more interesting stalls by not charging rent? Car boot sale, but not. Colin Opened door to town centre, W..H.Smiths etcЕ Very commercial aspect in center of town. Imagined white disc like Independence Day. With light shooting down as if to White House. Ian Farmers markets like in California Fresh food. Selling food. Nice food. Festival Kennedy gardens, should be entertainment and social community feel. Variety of activities for a lot of people. What would they be. Energy Tony Football boots. Different sporting activities that are engaging for the young. Playing sports. Setting up community feel. That higher self esteem. Example there is a yacht club in Boston that provides free boating classes for children no matter what age or background. Most youngsters donТt have an idea of what they want to do. Providing opportunities. Discussion The architectural conflict. No down town area to renovate Luxury houses Commercialism is taking over A market town is built over centuries, Letchworth only 100 years old. The business management of the town is interfering with itТs organic development. Priorities for Letchworth. An updated constitution. A communal area. More communal gardens. A Centre or focal point. Encouragement of the rule 50 % hard standing to garden. Integration of classes and ages through cheaper rents in the center of Letchworth and cheap market stalls. Encouragement of a new vision for Letchworth that can move into the future. Revision of Rules to promote individualism and social inclusion. Politics, Communities Involvement. It was thought younger people donТt care or understand. The more experienced you are in life the more input you can give. They need to know how to form their own argument to be able to get involved at this level. There is no college or school for 20 somethings, there is a gap in this age group being represented at Letchworth. No evening classes. Young not really interested in politics, could this be changed? Children They may feel they are involved they havenТt got many tools for fun, their skateboarding park isolates them from the community just because it is quite far from the center of Letchworth and there is no where to get a drink. There is a need to provide opportunities to develop their identities and ways of having fun. There are children who just want to hang about. There are others that will get involved in activities it they are given an option like Clubs, dance - Organised activities. There is a minority who spoil opportunities for young. As to why this is, may need to be looked at. Facilities for the Young Most communities donТt want them. Find another way. Children donТt always want to do something. They will then just do nothing. Kids are rowdy when they are at the skateboard. It was near enough for them to go to, they. Town centre, architecturally protected. There are no cosy pubs, only modern ones for youngsters. Economic accessibility No down town area. They have Maximised rent with quality buildings. Economics comes into it. The Heritage Foundation has turned farm buildings into luxury houses. This is difficult economically, may be better to loose those areas which would be better economically or tie everything up. Some buildings at the back could be knocked down to have a nice thatched area on the edge of the industrial area. All old industries have housed right up to edge. Letchworth is therefore left in the middle of two extremes. Architechtural Blockage, Suggestion - B+B & Sophie Letchworth was originally built on the idea that there was mixed housing, a combination of houses based in the centre of Letchworth, mixing rich with poorer communities. It has become segregated. So it has gone against the initial ideals. The profit makers are giving up buildings and selling them on, this increases the segregation. The centre is becoming more and more affluent. Do many people live above the shops? It may be possible to have low cost rent and flats above shops. The Community The Community of the council estates need to feel the town is their own, they feel left out. Considered lowest of the low, the estate. The interpretation is that there are drug addicts on every corner. Foundation have control over this. If the Foundation says no, end of topic. No control , out of boundary. The management agreement. The people wonТt and shouldnТt be told by hierarchy, what to do. This has changed since the original plans. 50 % of hard standing, 50% of garden - Use this rule as a point of negotiation for change, to bring more green areas into cement areas. Provide more money to get what they want. (Too much money can be given to an individual for their home.) Heritage Foundation is very concerned with windows and doors not so much the community. We briefly explored the relationship between community and Heritage Foundation. Chief officers, status - Education, liason, no big vision. The property person, has a low status, control is easier then. They give out money but there is no inspiration in that area. Need to find new ways of doing things. They gave a big grant for tennis centre. Entertainment that is accessible to all walks of life encourages a sense of community. Golf club? It was decided that there needs to be more visionary people in planning department. Suggestions Ц Channeled from Source Really looking at the foundations of what Letchworth Garden City is and why it was designed will help to establish which aspects of the town planning are relevant now. Think about bringing in an updated constitution and a perception of what is wanted for today. It is important to find ways of creating a flow of energy that is to do with inclusion and different classes living in different areas of the town. There should be high cost and low cost rent in all the same areas. Bringing energies together to connect and involve people ways that mean it almost feels chaotic instead of having a structure of classes or ages. It therefore feels like a community. An important element of the vision of Letchworth is in bringing the garden into the city. There should only be 50% hard standing on the high street and other areas. Arcades could be used further, in the use of small, cheap or free market stalls. It is possible to encourage a more creative level about the needs of the people. Different voices and outlets for the community like the B+B project would encourage this. Not about problems but how to enjoy creative a flow an energy that is involving and project based in a way that means the communities town is also their home, inside and out. A garden maintained as an extension of the home in to the City was the basis of the original concept. The enclosed element of the garden should be followed through to the center of the town and surrounding areas. These elements could be further developed so that the home interior is extended to the exterior. A home garden is protected and maintained with an element of wild flowers, enclosure and low maintenance design. Aim - An inclusive community that is peaceful in its outlook, this is because of the garden feel. If people feel they are at peace, this manifests inside them as being at peace (e.g. peace gardens). The encouragement of movement and creative manifestation can grow into the development of Letchworth and the creative empowerment of the community. Strong Symbolism worth incorporating in the vision. William saw a garden, Monkjack Deer, tomato - This symbolised protection, care, nurture and enclosure whilst maintaining an element of freedom. Tony - Ebenezer HowardТs original vision may have been over managed. To bring the organic back there needs to be an element of growth and change that is time based. Lorna - Bought up a question of how to encourage action? Muscle Testing proved that Colin was good at making things happen and manifesting goals in the physical form. Ian Ц Interested in the creating of space for change through meetings. Different parts of creative process, one of them to talk about what you want, the next to decide what is wanted and then the third to make that happen. Some people forget the third bit or they donТt do the first bit. Maintaining a space of what to do and the vision, a space to hear and to create and to do. William said this is one of a number of debates, conferences and events. A point needs to come up of flicking through all ideas and deciding which ones are worth pushing forward further. One of the schools outside the estate may need to be developed to contain and encourage the community. Due to there being no college, there are very few evening classes. (There was a suggestion of the redevelopment of Broadway Gardens; football grounds, community activities through the natural use of that area.) The Heritage museum encourages the community and the building of the community and connecting community. Community Development Officer at the Heritage Foundation was an idea to propose to the Foundation. This would provide a counter argument. Why arenТt the Council and the Heritage Foundation closer connected? That is a question very difficult to answer! Close Meeting. Useful words in the development process: Patience, Partnership, Peace, Listening and Action. Lorna is open to suggestions of visions and suggested courses of action, if people could put them forward. If you can see how to develop the visionary and manifestation side of Alternative Planning and Letchworth Garden City, through your role and ideas, Lorna would be interested in hearing from you.
